We submitted our new 500ml Tropical Good Riddance Mozzie & Midgie Mousse.
To enter the Australian Made Category, we had to enter a product that is ~
"Both designed and manufactured in Australia. The product will display quality workmanship and recognise the outstanding performance of the Australian Made industry in Gifts and Homewares."
Have your fingers crossed for us! Winners are announced in Feb 2018.
When I was working in manufacturing, one of the improvement tools we used was called 5Whys. You basically ask “Why?” 5 times (or more) until to get to the root cause of an issue. It’s a very powerful tool that allows you to dig deep into an issue. I decided to try this on myself and my business starting with this…
I love my business? Why?
Because it helps people. Why?
Because we make a product that helps them enjoy being outside without worrying about getting bitten. Why?
Because I felt their pain while travelling around Australia. Why?
Because we were getting bitten and constantly worrying about mosquitos and midgies. Why?
Because we were living in a caravan. Why?
Because we wanted to explore and experience this amazing country of ours. Why?
Because it called us. Why?
Because travelling fills our heart with joy. Why?
Because when I lived overseas I realised we live in the best country in the world. Why?
Because it has a unique beauty and energy that you can feel. Why?
Because it rejuvenates you, recalibrates you, energises you. Why?
Because it strips away society's constructs and makes you feel like the only person on the planet. Why?
Because it gives you perspective. Why?
Because it is so vast, wide, open, natural, old.
So I realised this is what I really want. I want people to experience that. The magnificence of our country. The recalibration. The joy. In the best possible way. That is what our business is all about.
Wow, that’s a powerful tool. It really uncovered something deep.
At different times in my life I have experienced this crazy desire to leave my life behind and hit the road so strongly that I have actually gone into work and resigned on the spot. I have hit the road without a plan, just to go into the outback to really, truly feel life. As a result of those trips, my life completely changed.
The first time I felt the urge was in 1999, when I was living in Copenhagen after having lived in Belgium for 2 years. I hopped on a plane home and immediately bought myself a 4WD and camping gear as I knew I wanted to travel around this amazing country of ours.
In 2000, I drove from Melbourne to Broome with my sister and that gave me a taste of what was out there. In 2001, I got the urge to get back out there alone so I quit my job and just hit the road with no plan. I ended up meeting my future husband in Palm Valley. That's a whole other story...
The urge came again in 2009, this time with our 2 little boys in tow, and after 9 incredible months on the road I met Julie in Darwin, and we started Natural Wonders.
So, if you feel the urge to pack up and go drive around this country, just do it, for there is something amazing waiting out there for you.
We have received incredible feedback from customers using our Ultrasonic Diffuser to repel mosquitos with our Good Riddance Mozzie Essential Oil Blend. It can be used inside by plugging into a phone charger (it has a USB plug) or used outdoors with a portable battery pack (available at places like Big W). It is highly effective in diffusing the insect repelling essential oils far and wide both outdoors and indoors.
Another handy way to use a Diffuser is to use a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil if someone becomes sick in the household. Lavender is a very effective antibacterial which can purify the air of any air-borne viruses.
Japan is one of a growing number of countries to ban Triclosan, a common chemical found in everyday personal care products like anti-bacterial handwashes/gels and toothpaste. The decision follows the US, with the FDA finding that triclosan was no more effective at preventing the spread of illness than washing hands with soap and warm water. Research indicates that Triclosan is a thyroid toxin and has a negative environmental impact by contributing to antibacterial resistance and contaminates waterways.
Let's hope that Australia follows suit and bans triclosan from everyday personal care products on our shelves. The most important thing is that we, as consumers, educate ourselves about the ingredients in our personal care products and avoid those that are toxic and detrimental to our health. We recommend purchasing more of your personal care products from Health Food/Organic Shops and using helpful apps such as Chemical Maze.
This fantastic article from Choice goes into more detail about endocrine-disrupting chemicals in our everyday products and how to avoid them...
All Natural Wonders and Good Riddance products are free from Triclosan, Parabens, Phthalates and other toxic ingredients. We only use the highest quality plant-based natural and organic ingredients in all of our products. Natural Wonders is a proud member of Chemical Free Community.
There is growing awareness about the toxicity of fragrances in our everyday personal care products. Kate Grenville, an acclaimed Australian author, has just released a book about her investigation into fragrances, The Case Against Fragrance.
It is now well established that phthalates, which are the component of synthetic fragrances which make them last longer, are endocrine (hormone) disruptors and can potentially cause fertility issues, reproductive cancers and birth defects. Almost one third of the population report bad health effects from fragrance, such as allergies, headaches etc but do not realise that the cause may be fragrances.
We recommend checking the ingredients of your personal care products and look for the word "parfum" or "fragrance" on the labels. We only use plant-based ingredients in all of our products, including natural essential oils which provide a gorgeous non-toxic scent.
All Natural Wonders and Good Riddance Mozzie products are free from toxic fragrances and only use 100% natural and non-toxic essential oils.
Essential oils are a 100% natural, non-toxic fragrance and have renowned therapeutic benefits. There are many ways to use essential oils other than vapourising in an essential oil burner or ultrasonic diffuser (although this is a wonderful way to use them!). You can develop your own sprays or oils to use for different purposes. For example, many of our customers dilute our Good Riddance Essential Oil Blend in a spray bottle with water to spray around door frames and window frames to prevent mosquitos from entering the house, or to spray on clothes while travelling in a mosquito prone area, or to spray on their pets to prevent fleas. One of our customers also created her own spray to use on the children's hair as prevention against head lice. It is also possible to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil to create your own personalised massage oil.
There are just a few simple things to keep in mind when diluting essential oils:
For body: the safe dilution of essential oils to water or oil is 2.5% - 5% (approx 50 drops of essential oils to 100ml water/oil)
For face: the safe dilution of essential oils is 0.5% (approx 10 drop of essential oils to 100ml water/oil).
If you have any questions about diluting essential oils, please don't hesitate to get in touch at email@example.com. Our full range of essential oils and diffuser can be found here....
It is a little known fact that babies' skin is still forming for at least three months after birth. It is not yet a proper barrier under this age and it is for this reason we recommend that as little as possible is applied directly on babies' skin.
The skin of babies differs from adult skin in several ways and has a greater potential for irritation. Baby skin is generally about 60% the thickness of adult skin. This means that a higher amount of chemicals and other substances can be absorbed compared to adult skin. Baby skin also lacks several ‘protective’ enzymes, leaving their skin more susceptible to irritation and sensitivity reactions.
Babies do not need bathing every day. It’s best to bath them every two to three days to keep protective oils on the skin’s surface. It is important to use extremely mild baby wash products with no colours, preservatives or fragrances. Ideally, we recommend not using any products that create bubbles as these are generally petrochemical based and can irritate the skin (avoid SLSs). A natural alternative is to make them a milk bath as milk is gently cleansing (Goat's Milk Powder is our favourite).
We recommend using our baby powder made with natural ingredients (such as Ivory Clay) and avoiding any powders that contain Talc. There has been controversy in recent years regarding mainstream baby products containing Talc such as Johnson's Baby Powder and the link with cancer (click for more info here...)
When heading outdoors, it is best for babies under three months to be covered up in a wrap to cover as much exposed skin as possible (so nasty bugs can't bite them!). For babies over three months and age, our Baby Good Riddance Mozzie & Midgie Mousse has been specially formulated for babies' skin.
Scented candles have become a staple, go-to gift idea. They are renowned for their mood enhancing and emotionally soothing benefits, as well as creating a lovely ambient atmosphere. The truth is however, that most commercially produced candles contain substances that when burned, may emit small amounts of toxins such as acetone, benzene, lead and mercury, polluting the air in your home. It is very important to know the ingredients in your scented candle to ensure that it is safe for you and your family.
Most scented candles are made with paraffin wax which is a common name for alkane hydrocarbons, a by-product of petroleum refining. Soot from paraffin candles also contains many of the same toxins found in diesel fuel.
Make sure you protect the indoor air quality of your home by using non-toxic candles made out of soy wax or beeswax. Also, look for soy wax or beeswax tea lights, votives and birthday candles too.
For those wishing to make their own soy wax or beeswax candles, you can watch this video for more info...
Our Good Riddance Mozzie & Midgie Mousse Candles are made with 100% natural soy wax so you can enjoy your home and the outdoors without risking exposure to nasty toxic chemicals.
Here at Natural Wonders, we are all about creating products that help you enjoy the outdoors without being eaten and without having to use toxic chemicals! For years, the only option available to protect yourself from mosquitos were products containing toxic chemicals like DEET (a proven neuro-toxin). This is what lead Jeannie (our Founder and Cosmetic Chemist) to develop the Good Riddance Mozzie & Midgie Mousse range whilst living in Darwin as she was concerned about the toxic effects of conventional insect repellents on her children.
After two years of testing and trialling with the help of fishermen in all sorts of insect-infested areas of the Top End (Shady Camp, Kakadu, Dundee Beach etc), Jeannie developed the Tropical Strength Good Riddance Mozzie & Midgie Mousse. The reason it became a lotion was that it creates a physical barrier for midgies and sandflies (contains beeswax and cocoa butter) and holds the essential oils on the skin for longer than spray repellents.
The Tropical Strength Good Riddance Mousse contains a strong repelling blend of Citronella, Lemon Scented Tea Tree, Lemongrass, Rosemary and Cedarwood essential oils. The Baby (Sensitive Skin) Good Riddance Mousse contains Lavender, Palmarosa and Geranium essentials which are safe for babies, pregnant women and people with sensitive skin conditions like eczema.
We have noticed a huge shift in people's awareness towards toxic free and chemical free products over the last few years and are proud to be part of this revolution! We are also a proud member of the Chemical Free Community in Australia.
Our Good Riddance Mozzie & Midgie Mousse protects against mosquitos, midgies and sandflies for up to 4 hours without the use of DEET. It is available online at www.goodriddance.com.au or one of our many stockists around Australia (click here).
Apply liberal amounts of olive oil to the hair and scalp, making sure all of the hair is covered. Once all of the hair is well-coated, put on a shower cap and leave on overnight. It may be helpful to cover the pillow with a couple of towels.
The purpose of this is to suffocate the lice with the oil, as they’ve got a number of small openings on their bodies which they breathe through.
In the morning, find a spot where a mess won’t matter. Place a towel over their shoulders and comb out the hair to remove as much of the oil as you can, soaking the comb often in vinegar. This process will remove both lice and some nits. Use a metal nit comb to help remove as many nits as possible.
Wash out the olive oil with natural shampoo.
Check back every day or so over the next 3 weeks and repeat this process until all the eggs are gone. We have found that it usually only takes the one treatment to do the job.
